Overview

Professor Allan Peterson

We are pleased to announce a conference to celebrate the many accomplishments of Professor Allan Peterson, Charles Bessey Professor of Mathematics at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The conference will be held the weekend of October 25-27, 2013. This also marks the 45th year since he joined the Department in 1968.

The conference will feature plenary lectures by Martin Bohner, Ravi Agarwal, John Graef, Saber Elaydi, and Johnny Henderson. The conference will begin with Martin Bohner's plenary lecture, which will double as the Mathematics Department Colloquium on Friday afternoon, October 25th at 4 PM in Avery Hall 115.

There will also be contributed 20-minute lectures and a Poster Session. The conference will end at noon on Sunday. All talks will be in Avery Hall. A banquet will be held at the Holiday Inn Downtown on Saturday evening. The banquet is included with the cost of registration, which is $40 ($20 for students). Guests must purchase advance banquet tickets for $30. Reduced lodging, which includes breakfast, is available at the Holiday Inn Downtown.

• Conjugate Boundary Value Problems

• Professor and Chair of the Department of Mathematics at Texas A&M University–Kingsville, has made fundamental contributions to nonlinear analysis, differential and difference equations, fixed point theory, and general inequalities. His 800+ publications have been cited by thousands of researchers and have been done in collaboration with over 300 co-authors. He is the third most cited researcher of all time.

• Martin Bohner

• The Beverton--Holt q-Difference Equation

• Professor of Mathematics at Missouri University of Science and Technology is a world-renowned leader on time scales calculus. His contributions to the time scales community put him at the forefront of the research in this area. He has written over 100 papers and has co-authored Dynamic Equations on Time Scales: An Introduction with Applications and he has co-edited Advances in Dynamic Equations on Time Scales, two of the most pivotal texts on time scales calculus.

• Saber Elaydi

• Global Dynamics: difference equations versus discrete dynamical systems

• Professor and Chair of the Department of Mathematics at Trinity University is a leading expert on difference equations and discrete dynamical systems as applied to mathematical biology. He has published over 100 articles and books on these topics and will be a dynamic speaker for our conference.

• John Graef

• Nonoscillation of All Solutions of a Higher Order Nonlinear Delay Dynamic Equation on Time Scales

• Professor and Chair of the Department of Mathematics at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga is an expert on ordinary and functional differential equations, difference equations, impulsive systems, differential inclusions, and dynamic equations on time scales. His work has been applied to nonlinear oscillation theory, boundary value problems, and mathematical modeling of biological systems.

• Johnny Henderson

• Boundary Value Problems for Third Order Ordinary Differential Equations

• Distinguished Professor of Mathematics at Baylor University is an internationally recognized researcher in boundary value problems for ordinary differential equations, finite difference equations, and dynamic equations on time scales. He was named an AMS Fellow in November, 2012.

Contributed Talks/Poster Session

In addition to five plenary talks, there will be slots for 15 twenty-minute talks during the three-day conference and a poster session. The speakers for the contributed talks will be invited via e-mail. Most of the twenty-minute talks will be given by recent Ph.D.s, advanced graduate students, or people from traditionally underrepresented groups in mathematics. The poster session will enable more people to present than just the plenary speakers and invited contributed talks. Presenters for the poster session will apply via the conference website to give a presentation.

Registration Fee

There is a $40 ($20 for current graduate students) registration fee for the conference. The fee will include the Saturday night banquet. If you wish to bring a guest to the banquet, the guest fee is $30.

You will be able to pay by mailing a check (make check payable to: University of Nebraska-Lincoln). To confirm your registration the fee must be paid by October 1, 2013. Payment instruction are provided in the online registration.

Lodging

For your convenience, a block of rooms has been reserved at the Downtown Holiday Inn for Friday, October 25 and Saturday, October 26, 2013. A small number of rooms are also blocked for Sunday, October 27th. The rate is $95.00 per night which includes breakfast and parking. The above rooms will be held until the cut-off date of October 1st, at which time unused portions of the guestroom block will be released for general resale. After the cut-off date rooms are based on availability and may not be provided at the discounted group rate listed above.

Reservations

Reservations can be made by calling (402) 475-4011, ask for in-house reservations and request the UNL Math Conference group rate. Guests will be asked to provide a credit card number as a guarantee when making their reservation. If you make a reservation online or through central reservations you will not receive the discounted group rate.

Dining, lodging, parking and travel

There are many restaurants within walking distance in the downtown area for lunch and dinner as well as the Nebraska Union. A list of restaurants will be available at the registration desk. Local information can be found at the Lincoln Convention and Visitor's Bureau, Downtown Lincoln Association, and UNL's visitor information.

Technology for presenters

All of the rooms in which talks will be given will have document cameras with electronic projectors and typically a computer and/or a connection for a laptop computer. If you wish to use this equipment to present, you may, but:

1. It is strongly recommended that you have a copy of your talk prepared for use with a document camera, just in case.
2. It is recommended that you try out the equipment in the room prior to your talk.
