In 1996, Roger and Sylvia Wiegand established a fellowship for the support of graduate student research in honor of Sylvia's grandparents, Grace and William Young. In 1895, Grace (who studied with Felix Klein in Gottingen) became the first woman ever to receive a Ph.D. in mathematics from a German University. The NSF GRFP recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students in NSF-supported STEM disciplines who are pursuing research-based master's and doctoral degrees at accredited US institutions.
Formerly known as the National Physical Science Consortium, Graduate Fellowships for STEM Diversity is a partnership between government agencies and laboratories, industry, and higher education. GFSD is open for application by all U.S. citizens regardless of race or gender. GFSD's goal is to increase the number of American citizens with graduate degrees in STEM fields, emphasizing recruitment of a diverse applicant pool.
