Kathryn Van Etten, a sixth-year graduate student at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln, uses she/her or they/them pronouns. She studies computational and geometric group theory with Dr. Susan Hermiller, a field that studies the properties of groups by examining their associated geometric structures, or vice versa. If you’ve ever heard of a “Cayley graph,” that’s geometric group theory — and if you haven’t, Kathryn would be more than happy to say more! Besides math, Kathryn also likes to talk about her cat, Nyx, and her hobbies, such as knitting and crocheting.
