Dr. Nicole Buan is a Professor of Biochemistry and Chair of the Biological Chemistry graduate program at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Dr. Buan and her students study redox biochemistry, systems, and synthetic biology in archaea, bacteria, and plants. They research how proteins interact to control the flow of electrons and metabolites in cells, particularly in methanoarchaea microbes that can grow by synthesizing methane, a high-energy sustainable rocket fuel. Buan lab research has been awarded several patents, and Dr. Buan is the owner of two biotech startups. In addition to research and mentoring, Dr. Buan co-founded the Archaea Power Hour international virtual seminar series and serves as Associate Editor for Applied Environmental Microbiology, Frontiers in Microbiology, and Frontiers in Synthetic Biology journals. She is also a Council Member of the Engineering Biology Research Consortium, a nonprofit group of academic and industry leaders who advise on US biotechnology and bioeconomy policy. Her team’s work combines cutting-edge science with real-world impact to create solutions for clean energy, food security, and a sustainable future.
